Prof. Surhud More
Astronomy Professor, IUCAA
Surhud More is a professor of astronomy at the Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune India. He works on cosmology, galaxy formation and evolution and the outskirts of the solar system. Surhud has a B Tech in Engineering Physics from IIT Bombay in 2005. He obtained his PhD from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg and has carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Chicago. He was an associate professor at the Kavli Institute for Physics and Mathematics of the Universe of the University of Tokyo before he returned to India in 2018. Surhud is on the Science Advisory Committee of the Thirty meter telescope, one of India's mega-science projects. He is the Program Manager for the Rubin Legacy Survey of Space and Time collaboration in India, is the Deputy Manager of the Office of Astronomy for Education Center India, and a National Astronomy Education Coordinator India. He was involved in the guidance of numerous Indian Astronomy Olympiad teams. Finally, Surhud has also worked on science education in schools, and is part of the text book development team of the newly released NCERT textbooks.

Exploring the Universe Through Everyday Astronomical Observations
Astronomy is among the oldest sciences, rooted in humanity’s long-standing practice of observing and recording the sky. Over centuries, astronomical observations have guided timekeeping, seasonal cycles, calendars and festivals, and the understanding of phenomena such as eclipses, ultimately shaping our broader understanding of the Universe. Reflecting this rich legacy, many school curricula (including NCERT) include material from astronomy in the middle school. In this talk, I will discuss selected themes from astronomy and explore the pedagogical opportunities and challenges involved in helping students meaningfully engage with these concepts. I will discuss how these curricular developments provide valuable opportunities for experiential learning, linking scientific concepts with history, culture, mathematics, and students’ lived experiences.Date: 19 June 2026
